Instrument Rental
We strongly encourage all new string orchestra students to start off with a rental instrument. Renting is an easy, affordable way to start off on the right path to playing an instrument. Many well meaning parents who purchase an instrument online often end up buying a lemon. String instruments should be made of wood, properly varnished, and have a good set-up. We do not allow painted/colored instruments in our orchestra program.
Summer Strings 2024 Information
Summer Strings will be at Crown Point High School from June 10 - June 27, 2024, Monday thru Thursday. All beginning string students will get their rental instrument and bring it home on the first day of class. Students will bring their instruments back and forth for the duration of the camp. The only exception are the basses. New bass players will take their instruments home the first day and use a school instrument for the camp. Class offerings are listed below. Two class sessions are offered for the beginners, you only need to choose one, so pick the one that is most convenient for your schedule. Current middle school students will meet at the 10am and 11am hours and be divided by grade level.
Beginning Strings 1 - 8:00-8:50am - new orchestra students
Beginning Strings 2 - 9:00-9:50am - new orchestra students
6th Grade Strings - 10:00-10:50am - class for students entering 6th grade
7th/8th Grade Strings - 11:00-11:50am - class for students entering 7th/8th grade
The cost for the 3 week Monday-Thursday string camp at CPHS is $110 and includes a tee-shirt, treats and LOTS of quality music and music education! You can now pay for your registration online, but plan to attend the try-out night to get sized for an instrument and pay for the instrument rental with Quinlan and Fabish.

F.A.Q
What if I can only come to part of the camp?
Then come as much as you can! Any instruction is better than none, and there will be plenty of CPHS students to help you get caught-up.
Do I have to rent an instrument?
We strongly encourage all beginning string students to rent an instrument with Quinlan and Fabish. Q&F has been servicing CP Schools and several other school orchestra programs in the area for decades and we trust them with the quality of their rental instruments. String instruments grow with the student and come in fractional sizes, as your child grows, they can get larger size instruments for free. If you buy, then you'll have to purchase a new instrument each time your child grows. Although instruments on Amazon come at very attractive prices, they are often lemons and not worth the money. PLEASE DO NOT BUY AN INSTRUMENT FROM AMAZON. If you insist on purchasing an instrument, please let us help you navigate buying one as there are lots "violin shaped objects" out there that will make music unenjoyable and difficult at best. If you already have an instrument in your family, please bring it in for a playing and sizing check. The CP Orchestra Program does not make any money from using Q&F, we only "profit" from the sound the kids get out of quality, playable instruments!
Do I have to go to Summer Strings?
Yes! We strongly encourage all beginners, especially, and all current middle school students to attend this valuable music experience. The new kids get to learn their instrument and make music with their friends while making new ones, and the middle school kids get to reconnect with students from the other middle school! Also, it's only a few weeks and it's in the morning so you'll have the rest of your day for summer fun!!!
What happens after Summer Orchestra?
You now have the power to make music!!!! Keep your instrument with you for the summer, continue practicing, consider getting a private lessons teacher, and start 5th Grade After School Orchestra Club on Tuesday and/or Thursdays when school stars! An updated 5th Grade Orchestra Club schedule will be sent out before the start of the 2024-25 school year.
Is the 5th Grade After School Orchestra Club required?
It is strongly recommended that all 5th grade orchestra students attend. If you cannot attend due to transportation or sports conflicts, you can always take private lessons and join the orchestra in 6th grade when it meets daily during the school day.
Is there bus service to Summer Strings or 5th Grade After School Orchestra?
No, transportation is not provided. However, several parents of music students car-pool! Students can also walk or ride their bikes. Since we are at CPHS, we are close to the YMCA.
When does 5th Grade After School Orchestra Club begin and how long does it last?
We typically start the Tuesday after Labor Day Weekend and continue throughout the school year until the All City Strings Concert in May.
How do I sign up for 6th Grade Middle School Orchestra at Taft or Wheeler?
We take our current 5th grade lists and give them to the guidance counselors and it's that easy! If you do not wish to continue with orchestra in 6th grade, please let us know.
