Who can join the orchestra?
In Crown Point Schools, any 4th grader can join the orchestra going into 5th grade. There is no audition requirement to be in 5th grade orchestra, only a willingness to try to make music as part of a team.
What does the orchestra do?
Students will learn to read music, play in harmony, and work as a team to create a blended sound. The majority of class is dedicated to learning to play your instrument and preparing for concerts and contests throughout the year. Students in orchestra also learn concentration skills, grit and determination, and self-confidence.
When does the orchestra meet?
Students will start off with Summer Strings Camp that meets from June 9-26, Monday-Thursday, no Friday classes. Next, students will join the 5th Grade After School Orchestra Club that meets one a week throughout the school year at Taft or Col. Wheeler. In 6th grade, the orchestra meets as a daily class during the school day.
Can my child participate in music and athletics or other clubs?
Of course they can! We try our best to minimize conflicts with sports and clubs. Several orchestra students are also involved with football, robotics, soccer, engineering clubs, softball, spell bowl, baseball, yearbook club, tennis, cross country, and more. There's always a way to find the time for all of the things your child wants to do. We support and encourage all students to excel in their artistic, athletic, and academic pursuits.
How do I sign-up?
Come to one of our sign-up nights on Monday, March 3 from 4-7pm OR Tuesday, March 11, 4-7pm in the CPHS Orchestra Room. You will be able to try and get sized for an instrument, pay for the summer camp, and pay for an instrument rental all in one place. This is an open house style event, come at your convenience!
How much does it cost?
The 3 week summer camp fee is $110. The instrument varies depending on your instrument (see below).
Violin/Viola: initial rental is $69 for a 4 month trial period, then $25 a month
Cello: initial rental is $99 for a 4 month trial period, then $35 a month
Bass: initial rental is $156 for a 4 month trial period, then $59 a month
Do I have to rent an instrument?
The short answer is no, you do not. However, renting is an easy, affordable way to start off on the right path to learning an instrument. Unfortunately, Amazon, Temu, Facebook MarketPlace, and Craigslist are full of cheap instruments that are not playable. Often times, well meaning parents or family members will buy or donate an instrument that is not the right size, needs major repairs, or is just completely unworkable. If you insist on buying an instrument, please reach out to a director for guidance. Two more advantages to renting are that if the student breaks the instrument (this happens frequently with beginners) then instrument is replaced for free, and a portion of the rental fee goes towards a future purchase. Renting is the best way to start out on the right path and the student is the one who benefits the most!
